Instructions for migrating files

File Storage Overview

Whether you know it or not, you already have several file storage areas:

  • The university provides everyone with an ONID (Oregon State Network ID) account that includes 1 GB of file storage. The ONID home page includes basic information about ONID accounts.
  • The College of Business has provided each student with two storage areas on the college's file server. Since these file storage areas will stop working as of June 20, 2008, you should transfer files that you want to keep to your ONID storage areas.
    • Within Bexell Hall, the file server's name is simply Cob-Storage.
    • Outside Bexell Hall but still on campus, the name is file://cob-storage.bus.oregonstate.edu. If you click on the previous link, you will be shown a list of all file storage areas for faculty, students, and staff within the college.
    • If you are off campus, please read our instructions about How to Access Files from Remote Locations.

Two College of Business storage areas: file storage and web storage

Until June 20, 2008, every student will have two storage areas on Cob-Storage: an area for storing general files and a web storage area.

  • Students have a combined storage limit of 1.0 G in both areas.
    • General files are stored at \\cob-storage\Username. For example, in the image at the right, \\cob-storage\takk248 will lead directly to Takk248's general storage area.
      • Files in this area can be reached easily through "disk drive P:" or by going to your My Documents folder.
    • Web files are stored at \\cob-storage\studentwebdata\username.
      • Students can get to their web area by:
        • Going to drive V and clicking on the folder with your Username
        • Entering \\cob-storage\studentwebdata\username directly into Internet Explorer.
      • If you are outside Bexell Hall, it may be useful to know the actual path name for your web area is \\cob-storage.bus.oregonstate.edu\studentwebdata\Username

Moving messages from your College of Business box to your ONID box.

If you have files on the college's Cob-Storage server that you want to keep, you have several approaches to use. The most obvious method is to stick a flash drive in the USB port of a computer in the basement of Bexell Hall, and then copy files onto your flash drive.

Another approach is to copy files into your ONID storage area. The rest of this section describes how you can drag folders from Cob-Storage to ONID (and vice-versa) to move lots of files easily. The basic approach will involve setting up two Explorer windows: one will show your Cob-Storage files and the other will show your ONID file storage area. Then you will be able to copy folders from one window to the other.

These instructions assume you are in the College of Business basement computer lab. Begin by logging onto one of the computers with your Business account. Next, click the Start button and select Run. In the Run dialog box, type \\onid-fs\username, where you replace username with your actual ONID username.

When prompted for your User name, enter ONID\username, where you replace username with your actual ONID username. Type your ONID password in the password box. Note: You MUST type ‘ONID\’ before your username.

You should now be looking at an Explorer window showing the files and folders in your ONID storage area, as shown below:

Next, open a My Computer window and find the folders you want to copy to ONID. Now that you have two file management windows open, you can use simple copy-and-paste commands to copy files or folders from one window to the other.
